Where Is Your Energy Really Going? How to Stop the Draining Thought Loop

Have you ever reached the end of a day feeling utterly exhausted — and yet you can't quite put your finger on what you actually did? You were busy. You were thinking. But the thinking didn't feel productive. It felt... circular.

This is one of the quietest forms of energy drain there is. And most of us don't even notice it's happening until we're running on empty.

The Energy We Don't Account For

We're very good at tracking our physical energy — sleep, food, exercise. But we rarely account for our mental and emotional energy. Yet this is often where the real depletion happens.

Think about how much of your mental energy goes into worrying about things outside your control, replaying conversations you wish had gone differently, anticipating problems that haven't happened yet, or people-pleasing and second-guessing how you're being perceived. If you recognise yourself in any of that, you are not alone. These are incredibly common patterns, and they have a significant cost.

The Worry Loop

One of the most common energy drains I see with clients is what I call the worry loop — where the mind circles the same concern again and again without resolution. It feels like problem-solving, but it isn't. It's just the anxiety speaking.

True problem-solving requires action or acceptance. The worry loop offers neither. It just keeps the nervous system on high alert, using up enormous resources for no return.

A Practical Tool: The Two-Circle Exercise

Try this. Draw two circles on a piece of paper. Label one "things I can control" and the other "things I cannot control." Then take the thing that's been consuming your thoughts and honestly decide which circle it belongs in.

If it's in your control circle, write down one small action you could take. Just one. Then take it, or schedule it. The energy can go somewhere useful.

If it's in the other circle — and a surprising amount of what we worry about is — ask yourself: what would it mean to genuinely set this down? Not to stop caring, but to stop carrying it as if carrying it will somehow help.

Reclaiming Your Energy

Changing these patterns takes time. They've often been with us for years, quietly shaping how we move through the world. But with awareness and the right tools, real change is possible.

If journalling resonates with you, this kind of reflection is exactly what we explore in my free monthly Journalling for Wellbeing workshop — first Saturday of every month at 8:30am. Come as you are.

And if you'd like to work through your own energy patterns in a one-to-one space, I offer a free discovery call as a starting point. No pressure, just a conversation. Deb x
